M. David Cogburn, M.D.
M. David Cogburn, M.D. attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville and earned a degree with distinction in Biology. He attended East Carolina University School of Medicine and completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, FL and completed his dermatology residency at Lloyd Nolan Hospital & Health Clinics in Birmingham, AL and the North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. At the time, Chapel Hill was considered one of the top dermatology programs in the country, chaired by Dr. Clayton Wheeler, a pioneer in the field of diagnostic dermatology.
Dr. Cogburn is board certified by the American Academy of Dermatology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a member of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and the NC Dermatology Society. He is a member of the Board and the Director of Professional Relations for the North American Clinical Dermatological Society. He is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill through the Mountain Area Health Education Center and also serves on the Board of Trustees at UNC-Asheville.
Dr. Cogburn established Carolina Mountain Dermatology, PA in 1986. He practices general dermatology which includes diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair and nails as well as biopsies and surgery for the treatment of skin cancer. Dr. Cogburn has a special interest in cosmetic dermatology and has been performing BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers since they were first introduced in the marketplace. He is only 1 of 3 administrators of Sculptra Aesthetic® in North Carolina and the only Sculptra trainer to earn the Platinum level.
Dr. Cogburn was the first dermatologist in North Carolina to receive advanced training in Tumescent Liposuction from Dr. Jeffrey Klein, and has been performing tumescent liposuction for 15 years. He is also the first dermatologist in Asheville to utilize the services of dermatopathologists within his practice.
Dr. Cogburn is an appointee to the Board of Trustees of the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He spends countless hours in development of our local university. He is also a former Director, Vice-Chair and Chairman of the UNC-Asheville Foundation. He is a former Director of the Board of the Bank of Asheville. He also volunteers for various dermatology and sun safety educational seminars throughout the community, as well as the Annual Skin Cancer Screening at the Asheville Mall in conjunction with Mission Hospitals.
A native of North Carolina with family roots dating back to 1789, Dr. Cogburn is married and lives with his wife in Asheville. They have two adult children. He enjoys spending time with his family, various civic responsibilities, working out and playing the piano.
